Beseiged in the Kremlin

On a day when the sun was blazing and the air was humid in late September, the Cathedral Square of the Moscow Kremlin was besieged by tourists — mostly Europeans and Americans — eagerly snapping photos of the gleaming cupolas, gilded moldings and ornately carved cathedral doors. I skirted the melee and watched as the crowd encroached history with a sense of entitlement that left me feeling somewhat repulsed.

Hundreds of curious visitors with thousands of opinions about the events and motivations that brought these marvels of architecture and expressions of the pursuit of glory pressed towards the doorway of the Assumption Cathedral.
